Campaign highlights role of gas in regional industries and communities

Written by Australian Energy Producers | 04 November 2026

As we approach the final weeks of Federal Parliament for 2026, the Australia Runs on Natural Gas campaign remains a key pillar of our national advocacy strategy, and in countering the well-funded and coordinated misinformation campaigns calling for a 25% gas export tax.

With the Federal Government expected to try to pass its gas reservation legislation before the end of the year, the campaign will be prominent in Canberra for the final two Parliamentary sitting weeks, with targeted social media ads and regular ads on Sky's News24 highlighting our industry's significant contribution to Australia's economy and energy security.

The campaign also recently launched new regional case study videos featuring Corangamite Mayor Kate Makin and a Victorian dairy farmer highlighting the importance of natural gas to regional communities and the dairy and farming sectors.

The videos have already been seen more than two million times on social media, helping bring local voices and real-world examples into the campaign. They are part of a new series showcasing community advocates who work with the gas industry or rely on natural gas in their operations, with more case studies to be rolled out nationally in the coming weeks and months.

Since 1 July, the campaign has driven more than 313,000 clicks to the campaign website, reflecting continued engagement with advertising across social media and digital channels.

The campaign also maintains a high-visibility presence in outdoor and print media, with print ads appearing last month in The Australian, Daily Telegraph and Adelaide Advertiser reinforcing the industry's tax and economic contribution.

Victorian election campaign builds momentum

With the Victorian election on 28 November approaching, our state election campaign continues to build community engagement and support for policies that support more local gas development and protect household energy choice.

Since launching in July, the Victorian campaign has been seen more than 3.2 million times, reached almost 1.3 million Victorians and generated more than 90,000 clicks to the website. Around 7,500 Victorians have taken our online community poll on the state's energy future, with more than 90 per cent of respondents supporting more local gas development and retaining household choice to keep using gas.

Radio and outdoor advertising will build on existing social media activity in the final weeks before Victorians head to the polls, including a pledge goal of 20,000 signatures to Government to highlight Victorians need for energy choice.

Queensland campaign highlights gas industry's broader contribution

Last month we launched a new social media campaign in Queensland highlighting the importance of the state's gas industry to energy security, economic activity and reliable gas supply across eastern Australia.

With the Federal Government's domestic gas reservation legislation before Parliament, the campaign reinforces the important role Queensland's gas industry plays in supplying domestic customers and supporting Australia's broader energy security.

The campaign is running in 12 key federal electorates, and has reached almost 1.8 million people and been viewed more than 13 million times in its first month. The ads direct audiences to a dedicated Queensland campaign page, providing locally relevant information about the industry's contribution.

Next steps

The campaign will continue its national advertising and targeted state-based activity, with a particular focus on tax, the Victorian election and the domestic gas reservation debate.

Members are encouraged to help amplify the campaign by sharing content across their networks, tagging Australian Energy Producers in social media posts and accessing campaign resources available on the member portal.
